Various directors and movie makers have tried to get a Halo movie off the ground in recent years. To date, nobody, not even the great Peter Jackson, has managed to do it.  Jackson said back in 2005 that he’d be excited to bring such a project to the big screen. But the movie got postponed a year later, and in 2009 was scrapped altogether.

Now, despite the circulating rumors concerning a revival of the film, a Microsoft representative has given GameSpot the disappointing news:

“As we’ve previously stated, we have no plans for a ‘Halo’ motion picture at this time.”

Halo fans clung to the idea that legendary director Steven Spielberg would pick up the project, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen either. District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp expressed some interest in giving it a whirl in 2013 but again, nothing really came of it.

For the time being, we have no official evidence that a Halo movie is in the works, but such a film seems almost inevitable, doesn’t it? Given the supreme popularity of the franchise, one would have to assume it’d sell plenty of box office tickets.

Do we really need another crappy game-to-movie adaptation?

I’m not saying that Jackson, Spielberg, or Blomkamp would deliver something “crappy,” but if someone else did it, the result could be disastrous. As we all know, films based on video games are very often mediocre; occasionally, they just plain suck. Take-Two Interactive has said numerous times that the reason they don’t want to turn Grand Theft Auto into a movie is simple: they don’t want a black mark on their esteemed series. Why risk it?

It’s not like IPs such as GTA and Halo don’t make enough already.
