Minecraft developer Mojang continued its five years of increased profit, topping out the 2012 revenue of $237 million dollars. According to a Wall Street Journal article, Mojang’s revenue for 2013 was $326 million, which in turn comes out to $128 million in profit. The largest expense for Mojang was Marcus “Notch” Persson, owner of the rights to the Minecraft IP; Persson received approximately $129 million in license fees.

Over 90% of the company’s revenue came directly from Minecraft itself, with the rest coming from merchandise and another of Mojang’s games, Scrolls. 38% of Mojang’s revenue came the PC version of the game, 30% from the console versions of the game, and 25% from the mobile version of the game.

Since its release in 2009, Minecraft has become a run away success. The game has over 100 million registered users, and has become a cultural icon. Players have created countless imaginative works, all ranging from amusement parks, castles, working big screen televisions, and recreated Pokémon battles. Minecraft’s popularity does not seem like it is waning, and Majong will have to wait and see if the game’s trend of growing popularity and profit continue into 2014.
