If you ever doubted that the Minecraft movie was a thing. It is. Not only that, it now has an official premiere date, which is only a few short years away — or, as the Minecraft blog tells us:
“It’s only 1,053 days. Or about 34 months, or 150 weeks, or a million and a half minutes.”
In case you don’t want to bother with the math on that, the official date is March 4, 2022.
Unfortunately, that’s far enough off we won’t be seeing any trailers or artwork for the game. But we do now have a few important bits of information on it — such as the plot and who’s involved.
The movie, which is being developed with Warner Bros. will be directed by Peter Sollett. Movie fans might recognize Sollett from his work on the 2008 comedy Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist. If you haven’t seen the movie, you can check out the trailer below.
Plot-wise, the Minecraft movie will tell the story of a teen girl who teams up with a group of adventurers to save the Overworld from the evil Ender Dragon.
The announcement on the Minecraft site also notes that fans can expect some differences between the film and the game. For one thing, they point out that there will be graphical differences — what with the actual game having a somewhat lower graphical quality than moviegoers might be looking for. Unfortunately, it will be a while before we actually see what these differences will look like.
That said, the Mojang team promises that the production of the movie will follow one philosophy the developer follows when creating the game.
“We want to make the movie — just as we make the game — for you.”
Mojang adds that they’re inspired by many of the things the community creates in-game and asks that players keep it coming. They did not say if some of those things might appear in the movie.
