Mortal Kombat 1 Trailer Resets the Timeline, Release Coming Later This Summer

Mortal Kombat 1 is official and will be releasing at the tail end of summer.

The Mortal Kombat 1 trailer is out, and we have a cavalcade of information, including a release date, platforms, a roster of characters, and much more. After many rumors and leaks in the past few weeks, NetherRealm Studios has finally announced Mortal Kombat 1 as the next game in the series.

As speculated by many (including myself), this latest installment in the long-running franchise will be a complete timeline reset with events taking place many years before the 1992 original. Following on from the story of Mortal Kombat 11, Fire God Liu Kang has reforged the timeline into his ideal version and is now protecting Earth Realm from new threats.

Here’s the bloody trailer to feast your eyes upon.

As we can see from the trailer, MK1 will feature reimagined versions of classic characters. Official details from WB Games state that we’ll see “Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and many others.” The game will also come packed with rollback netcode, with cross-play being added post-launch.

Mortal Kombat 1 will be released on September 19, 2023, for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch. The base version will retail at $69.99. The PC version is being developed by QLOC, while the Switch version is being developed by Shiver Entertainment and Saber Interactive.

NRS and partners have been working in secret for quite some time to have the game available so soon after this announcement. MK1 Pre-orders will open on May 19, 2023, and will give those who pre-order beta access sometime this summer. You’ll also receive Shang Tsung for the final game, likely meaning his inclusion in the story mode won’t unlock him for the roster.

As with previous Mortal Kombat titles, DLC will be available, and NRS has announced the full details of the game’s “Kombat Pack.” A premium edition, going for $109.99, will include said pack and contains six new characters, five guest characters, and a special skin for Johnny Cage based on Jean-Claude Van Damme.

If you want to take your love for the franchise further, a Kollector’s Edition priced at $249.99 contains all of the premium edition content with a 16.5-inch statue of Liu Kang along with an in-game skin based on the statue.
