Nintendo of America is celebrating a milestone for New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The hit classic on the original Nintendo Wii has sold over 10 million copies in North America.
On Wednesday night, NoA tweeted out a celebratory picture and joked about that being “a lot of penguin suits.”

To avoid confusion, let’s reiterate that number reflects the amount of copies sold in North America. Over 28.6 million copies have sold worldwide and is the fourth best-selling game ever on the Wii. Wii Sports obviously retains the first spot since it came bundled with the system (82.5 million copies), Mario Kart Wii had the second-most with 35.5 million copies, and Wii Sports Resort had over 32.6 million copies.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii was the successor to New Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo DS handheld. It was the first traditional Mario game to include simultaneous co-op play. Including the original Mario Bros., which had two plumbers fighting each other in the arcade, this was also the first Mario platform game to have four-player multiplayer. Gamers can play as Mario, Luigi, or one of the two Toads.
Just passing its fifth-year anniversary, the classic is still tacking on sales here in North America. What are your thoughts on the game reaching a big milestone in sales?
