The news was announced via the PlayStation Blog. Team Ninja provided the following summary of the DLC’s plot, which contains a slight spoiler for the ending of the original game:

Dragon of the North will take place in the Oshu region and introduce the ambitious ruler, Masamune Date, also known as the “One-Eyed Dragon”. Just when you thought that peace is finally restored in Japan through your brave efforts in completing the original campaign… we now begin to hear troubling rumours that the One-Eyed Dragon is secretly gathering spirit stones, setting a stage for more unrest and mayhem to take hold.

In regards to the One-Eyed Dragon, a well-known historical figure, Team Ninja say he was an impulsive leader, who believed he was superior to most men. The team hope he will present a formidable adversary to William.

Dragon of the North will introduce new locations, Yokai, Guardian Spirits, armor, ninja skills, magic, and a new weapon called the Odachi. Furthermore, Team Ninja also announced the long-awaited PVP feature will accompany the DLC. This allows players to fight each other, assuming they have a PlayStation Plus subscription.

Nioh originally launched on February 7, to critical acclaim, and managed to ship 1 million units in its first two weeks on the market. We thought Nioh was a great game that fused Onimusha and Dark Souls to create one of the best examples of the Souls-style yet.
