The news comes after months of problems surrounding the game, including the game’s developer, Starbreeze Studios, filing for bankruptcy.

In the past, rumors have circulated that the game had been canceled, prompting responses from its various publishers saying it had only been delayed.

As of yesterday, it can no longer be denied that the game has been terminated, at the hands of Skybound Entertainment.

Skybound, the owner of The Walking Dead’s IP and the publisher of the TWD comics, put the final nail in the game’s coffin, stating that the game did not meet their standards. As a result of this termination, the game is no longer prepped for release on console.

Skybound spoke to Variety about the cancellation yesterday, noting that it had done its “best to work with Starbreeze and resolve many issues that [Skybound] saw with the game.” The end result was a game that was below the quality the company had been promised.

The company also added that it shares fans’ disappointment with the game, and “will continue to look for alternative video game options for the IP.”

In follow up news, today Starbreeze posted a statement on its site indicating it still hopes to finish the game and is “working urgently to attempt to resolve the issue”.

This was almost immediately followed by another statement stating they’ve officially “received a notice of termination regarding the license agreement with Starbreeze”. The second notice seems to indicate the company is holding out hope it can work something out with Skybound.

That said, for now, they’ve been informed that further sales of the game will be halted and that should a solution not be reached the game won’t return to steam and the console version will not be released.

How long the two companies might have to reach a solution was not stated, but considering Skybound’s current actions, it won’t be much.
