On March 1st Netflix turned its metaphorical hat backwards and debuted every ’90s kid’s dream – Pokémon.
All of the Pokémon?!
Unfortunately, no. However, I don’t think many people are complaining. The most hyped release is the first Pokémon show: The Indigo League. Netflix comes equipped with 52 episodes of the first season, just short of the full 80. For those wondering, that includes 6 of the 8 badges. There’s no word yet if the other 28 will be added, but in the meantime I would suggest acquiring multiple boxes of tissues for the Bye Bye Butterfree episode.
While unsettled viewers wait for the rest of his or her beloved Indigo League episodes, Netflix has also shared with us with the 14th Pokémon season: Black and White and the two coinciding movies.
Everyone is included!
Before Netflix offered the show, the only previous legal streaming service for Pokémon was Hulu. To the world’s dismay, this was only offered in North America. Now the series is (legally) available to all inhabitants of Ireland, Canada, the US, and the UK. Go Netflix!
Is there a connection?
It may or may not be a coincidence that within an hour of the recent hit, Twitch Plays Pokémon phenomenon completed the original game, Netflix made the announcement to add the series. With an estimated 1.6 million people participating, it seems like an easy decision on Netflix’s part, especially since an entire genre of ’90s cartoons was recently added. The marketing strategist for Netflix deserves a pat on the back.
