It’s official, residents of the UK have chosen the PlayStation 4 as the winner of this generation of consoles. Having just reached one million systems sold in the United Kingdom, the console has become the 2nd fastest selling video game console in history for the nation. It took only 42 weeks to hit this landmark. The only console that has beaten these sales was the Nintendo Wii, which took only 38 weeks to sell one million units.

When the Nintendo Wii launched in 2006 it was Nintendo’s goal to appeal to audiences other than hardcore gamers. This was through the system’s motion controls, approchable games, and of course the cheaper price compared to Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

However, Sony isn’t going in this direction; they have proven that they want be a games-first console as opposed to the entertainment platform that Microsoft is highlighting with the Xbox One. One example of this is through the partnership with Activision to advertise Destiny. Whether the PS4 will continue to dominate in UK is anyone’s guess, but the future does look bright for Sony.
