Deep Silver released a statement on the game’s Steam page discussing the tough decision:

“Over the past weeks and months we’ve been evaluating how to proceed with Dead Island: Epidemic and looking towards the future for the game.

We’re sad to announce today that we’ve come to the conclusion to cease further development. “

In the time leading up to the complete shut down, the game will have one last hurrah for its users by giving “very large” discounts on every character and boost.

This discount is to make sure that users can spend the last of the currency on their accounts and try items and characters they haven’t tested yet. This implies that there will be no currency refunds.

Fans on the forums are sad to see it go. Many are upset that they won’t get to see the game’s full potential, but are ready if a revival of the game happened in the future.

Servers will be open until the end of the day October 15th Pacific Time. The game was only able to make it to open beta.
