As of writing, the Kickstarter is already more than 70 percent past its crowd-funding goal at $644,413 of $900,000. Beyond that, System Shock has plenty of stretch goals, including expanding the narrative and hiring an orchestra for the game’s soundtrack, so be sure to show your support if you wish to confront SHODAN in full remastered glory.

The first System Shock game was classic PC title of the 90s, in which you play as a hacker trying to take down SHODAN, a fearsome AI bent on taking over the planet via harnessing a powerful laser found in the Citadel Station. The protagonist attempts to stop her plan of razing the earth via solving the AI’s difficult traps and encountering various enemies, such as corrupted cyborgs or mutated crew members.

Now over 20 years later, the PC title gets a beautiful and functional facelift via the Unity engine.

Back in March of 2016, the developer team Nightdive Studios released an early gameplay trailer for System Shock, demonstrating the modern visuals and mood for the upcoming title.

On their Kickstarter page, the team talks about their goals for the game, stating the remaster is:

A modern take on System Shock, a faithful reboot; it’s not Citadel Station as it was, but as you remember it. Many improvements, overhauls and changes are being implemented to capture the spirit of what the original game was trying to convey, and bring it to contemporary gamers.

In particular, Nightdive Studios also talks about the updated gameplay and style of the game:

The user interface, game mechanics, enemies, and puzzles will be updated to reflect modern aesthetics and sensibilities, while maintaining the feel of the original.

Other tidbits about the Kickstarter is that SHODAN will be voiced by her original actress, Terri Brosius, along with planned additional voice over work for the game.
