Sonic Superstars Revealed During Summer Game Fest, Brings 3D to 2D

Sonic Superstars speeds onto the scene with its shiny new reveal trailer.

Today Sega announced a treat for 2D Sonic fans during the Summer Game Fest, Sonic Superstars. Harkening back to the classics, Sonic Superstars brings Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose as playable characters and will boast local 4-player co-op to explore new worlds and thwart Eggman once again.

This might be a 2D Sonic game, but it’s got more modern 3D visuals to spruce up the 2D plane and plenty of visual treats, as you can see in the trailer below!

While some of the environments in the trailer do look like classic Sonic levels we’ve seen before, Sega promises that Sonic Superstars will feature new zones and music, as well as physics familiar to both modern and classic Sonic fans. There does appear to be momentum-based movement in the trailer, though the proof will be in the pudding once the game releases in fall 2023.

Sonic fans may notice the slight redesigns shown in the trailer as well, their designs more rounded than most other recent 2D designs. The original Sonic the Hedgehog designer Naoto Ohshima is back in action here with Superstars, and has even designed a brand new character Sonic and friends will have to tussle with in their fight against Eggman.

There’s a lot to be excited about for fans of the series with the Superstars reveal trailer, though the development team has yet to be announced. This one isn’t being handled by Sonic Team, so who might it be? It doesn’t seem to be Dimps, so we’ll have to wait for more to be revealed to find out who is behind this Blue Blur excursion.

Sonic Superstars is slated for release in the Fall of this year for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Look for more coverage on this latest Sonic foray in the coming months.
