Sony Confirms Development of Next Generation Console (Is It the PS5?)

There's some buzz going around about what Sony plans to do for their next console release. Will it be the PS5 or will we see something new with PlayStation?

You may have heard several rumors circulating that Sony is currently planning for its next generation of consoles. Per reports across the gaming industry, it seems the company is well in the process already; the higher-ups at Sony seem to have come to the realization it’s not only time for them to develop a new platform with stronger hardware — but it’s required.

Kenichiiro Yoshida, Sony’s President and CEO, recently did an interview with the Financial Times and shared that, “At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware.”

However, don’t start clicking to your favorite shopping website just yet. While Sony not-so-secretly prepares for their next piece of hardware, they don’t expect to have it ready for release until three years from now.

Tsuyoshi Kodera, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, spoke with the Wall Street Journal earlier this year and said, “We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future.”

This means if you’re still on the fence about purchasing a PlayStation 4, now’s still a great time — or you can wait a little longer for the PlayStation 4 Pro to go down in price. Regardless of which you choose, you’ll still some mileage out of the console before the next iteration comes along.

What’s interesting is both Yoshida and Kodera avoided using the term “PlayStation 5” in their interviews. This hints at Sony wanting to pull away from the expected numbered console and go toward something else (…perhaps).

So while it’s still a little too early to tell what the next PlayStation will be called, we do know the next piece of hardware in Sony’s console line up will surely pack a punch as the company hunkers down and plans their next move.
