Spike VGX Show Overview: Reveals, Game of the Year Awards, and a New Borderlands Game!

Plenty of announcements, videos, and some surprises appeared in Spike's VGX Show last night
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

Spike VGX Show took place just some hours ago, and it brought quite a few surprises.

The show started with an unexpected reveal, Telltale Games partnered with Gearbox Software in order to bring us another episodic game, but this time based on the Borderlands universe, Tales from the Borderlands.

In this game, gamers will be able to interact with the already known and loved characters from Borderlands games, while controlling some brand new characters that will be coming with this new game.

As usual, your choices will drastically change the storyline of each episode, and there will be the common action you’ll find on any Borderlands game, combined together in order to bring some deeper storyline.

After this reveal, Square Enix made an appearance, confirming what was spotted earlier today: Tomb Raider Definitive Edition is coming. A re-make of the popular Tomb Raider 2013 game, with enhanced graphics in order to suit perfectly into the next-gen scene, Lara Croft will be taking the challenge of surviving this mysterious island once again, on a higher definition.

Following this confirmation, one game that has had us intrigued since its announcement back at E3, Quantum Break showed some gameplay footage, while explaining how this game play.

Quantum-Break-VGX-2013

Remember the popular 2007 game from Saber Interactive, TimeShift? Well, Quantum Break follows the basics of that game, enhancing it quite a lot.

In Quantum Break there are some time-manipulation skills bound to the main characters, including -obviously- the villain. When it comes to decisions, it was said that players will have some sort of premonitions, as they’ll be “seeing glimpses of different times” and will have to make a decision as to how to proceed, being these decisions critical to the storyline of the game.

Something that caught my attention was that they mentioned some sort of ability that involves moving objects, individually, through time, something that seems like if you could interfere with the time of a single object without disrupting what happens around it, I might’ve caught that wrong, but this is based on the videos I took, screenshots, and notes, so don’t hate if I got that wrong!

After this interesting reveal, we got a really short look at South Park: The Stick of Truth from which there isn’t really much to say, so let’s watch its trailer:

Destiny showed off some new gameplay footage, check it out below

Broken Age made an appearance as well, bringing two different characters, one is a girl and one is a boy. They both have their own stories, quite different one from another. While the first one lives in a planet where it is a honor to be given as a sacrifice in order to please the gods, the second one is trapped by his protector.

Both characters are around 14 years old, the girl decided to fight and escape from being sacrificed, while the boy is trying to escape his protector, a spacecraft’s AI that keeps him “safe” inside.

With some touching story and beautiful scenarios, Broken Age will definitely be making a hit when it launches.

After this touching story, what many of us had been waiting for was covered, Tom Clancy’s The Division got a brand new trailer, showing off the Snowdrop Engine.

With this engine, developers are aiming to bring the most realistic environments to play in, by bringing dynamic day-night cycle, dynamic illumination effects, procedural destruction, an advanced particle system, and dynamic weather.

For the second time in the show, Telltale Games made its appearance, this time to talk about its partnership with HBO in order to bring a Game of Thrones game.

This game will bring what we all love from Telltale Games, and this will be carried over to the storyline of HBO’s TV Series Game of Thrones.

Joe Danger‘s developer came to the show as well, to bring its very first next-gen game, which is quite an ambitious project. No Man’s Sky, an action/adventure game, where you actually have a full universe to explore.

When you’re in the spacecraft, and you see stars in the “sky”, those are stars…suns, which have planets orbiting around them, planets that you’ll be able to explore…

After this rather unique experience, we went from beautiful scenarios to fighting zombies in Techland‘s Dying Light Demo, which showed us a little bit of the fun we can have while surviving every day in this post-apocalyptic environment.

Quite amazing, isn’t it? I don’t know about you, but I’m dying to get my hands on this game!

After going through these zombies, we went back to Gareth, the Master Thief, and this brand new story trailer:

It was mentioned that in this game, you are not even going to need to kill a single person throughout the entire game, as, if you do it right, you’ll finish the game without anyone even noticing you.

As well, side quests are acquired by listening to AI, by doing so new objectives will appear, and they can be missed if you aren’t paying attention to the environment, so you better pay attention while playing the game, instead of just going for a speed run!

Then, the well awaited The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt made its appearance at the show, bringing an amazingly cool looking trailer.

Some are already calling this the Game of the Year for 2014, do you agree with this? Or are you like me and believe that it is way too early to start thinking about it?

Finally, Titanfall revealed two new titans that had never been showed before: The OGRE and The Stryder.

While the OGRE titan is here to cause some serious damage, Stryder is the fastest and most agile titan of them all, making it one of the biggest treats in the battlefield.

As you may be aware, this show wasn’t only about premiere videos and announcements, but it was to show everyone the best of the best, with different awards: Character of the Year, Best action/adventure Game, Best Sports Game, Best Independent Game, Best Shooter, Studio of the Year, and Game of the Year.
