After Disney’s purchase of George Lucas’ Star Wars empire and LucasArts, many wondered what direction their gaming division would take the galaxy far, far away. The release of Disney Infinity seemed to be the one big egg in their only basket. Also, with the new Battlefront on its way for the next-gen consoles franchise signaled that it was not going away, but rather being licensed out.

But, Disney did say after the closing of their Virtual World games and other divisions that the company would be moving in a more social gaming direction.

The newly announced Star Wars: Attack Squadrons from Disney, LucasArts and Area 52 Games seems to fit the bill.

Look At The Size Of That Thing!

First, Attack Squadrons gets to the heart of Star Wars gaming!

Battles in space!
Awesome starships!
Amazing and familiar locations!

This is a game not bogged down in quests or complicated storyline, etc.

Even after Battlefront, Starfighter and the addition of dogfighting to Star Wars: The Old Republic, most never harkened back to the original X-Wing and TIE Fighter game days for intense space combat.

Attack Squadrons promises intense ship-to-ship battles with up to 16 player death matches, team battles, and a Base Defense mode.

Players will also be able to customize their ships and Disney is promising new ship types, items and upgrades on a regular release schedule. The initial artwork shows some classic fighters like the X-Wing, Y-Wing, TIE fighter, TIE Interceptor, Slave I (a Mandalorian patrol ship), and even the Millennium Falcon as well Star Destroyers and Corellian Corvettes. Though, it appears that the larger ships will be part of the game’s Base Defense mode as well as massive space stations.

The game will be Free-to-Play. Winning pilots will also receive rewards for their efforts, but likely Disney will use premium ships, upgrades, and special items etc. as the income base.
