The 2015 Nintendo World Championships went underway yesterday, and man oh man, was it delightful. The ultimate showdown was between John Numbers and Cosmo, going head to head in 4 crafted Mario Maker stages.

Out of a total of 16 participants, John Numbers took home the championship.

John Numbers and Cosmo were both greeted by the one and only Shigeru Miyamoto at the end of the competition and receive a signed 3DS XL each. A speechless John Numbers also took home the trophy, and held it proudly on stage. Good job, John, you did great!

Prior to the Championship, Shigesato Itoi announced Earthbound Beginnings to be released on the Wii U virtual console immediately after the show. This title has never been seen in the West but was created long before Earthbound itself. Here’s the trailer from the Nintendo eShop:

Nintendo also unveiled another game to be released soon called Blastball. It’s a multi-player shooter that has a metroid-esque feel to it. This game was a surprise title that was also one of the games the contestants had competed in. We’ll find out more about the game during Nintendo’s E3 conference on June 16, 2015.

One last treat that I enjoyed to a great extent was the appearance of Reggie Fils-Aimé. He came head to head with previous contestant Hungrybox to settle it in Smash. It was a lighthearted showdown that was very fun to watch. Hungrybox stole the stage, and ultimately beat Reggie’s Ryu.

Well, there you have it! It’s never a dull moment with Nintendo. You can always rewatch the 2015 Nintendo World Championship here to catch all the quirks and surprises for yourself.
