Twenty years after Rare’s classic Perfect Dark graced the Nintendo 64, Microsoft studio The Initiative announced it is bringing Perfect Dark back.

Rare originally released Perfect Dark as a follow-up to GoldenEye 007. Part first-person shooter, part stealth game, the campaign of that game follows Joanna Dark as she tries to stop a conspiracy from a space corporation called dataDyne.

This time, it’s a bit different. Though the team only shared very high-level information about the game, it’s a reimagining set in an “Eco Sci-Fi” world reeling from a global disaster.

It’s a first-person shooter, but one that doesn’t completely focus on shooting, according to the developers. The way traversal and combat are described by the developers in the interview below gives off some serious Mirror’s Edge vibes.

The original Perfect Dark was very well received when it released and has gone on to become an N64 classic. It included robust (for the time) multiplayer modes and was so advanced that it required the Nintendo 64’s expansion pack to play.

There was a follow-up with Perfect Dark Zero in 2005, which also received positive reviews, but no other games have released for the franchise since. Hopefully, we’ll know more soon. Stay tuned to GameSkinny.
