The Next Call of Duty Will Be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare … Seriously

This year's Call of Duty will carry the Modern Warfare name, but it will be what some are calling a "soft reboot" of the subseries.

In an ever-confusing trend that’s consumed the world of naming conventions, the next Call of Duty will be called Call of Duty Modern Warfare

According to recent reports, the 2019 installment of the overarching Call of Duty franchise is being called a “soft reboot” of the Modern Warfare subseries.

As of this writing, Activision has yet to officially confirm the game’s title. However, reputable sources, including Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, have confirmed the game’s title.

The first game in the subseries was called Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and was released in 2007 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PC. The game was later remastered in 2016 and was released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. With that in mind, 2019’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare will be the third game to carry the ~same name.

However, it does make sense that Activision might go back to the Modern Warfare well. Despite the success of Call of Duty 2, 2007’s Modern Warfare is the game that officially put the entire franchise on the map for good.

Although little is known about the next CoD entry aside from its name, sources have told Eurogamer that more will be revealed before the end of May

The Call of Duty franchise has also seen a bit of upheaval in recent months, it seems. As we recently reported via Kotaku, 2020’s Call of Duty game has shifted scope and will now be Black Ops 5. This follows reported problems between Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games, which has led to Treyarch taking control of 2020’s Black Ops 5

In other franchise news, pre-registration is currently open for Call of Duty: Mobile, while more information about the game’s various modes, including battle royale, continue to surface.
