Twitch Plays Pokemon Catches ‘Em All

The Internet won last night when the Twitch Plays Pokémon channel caught Mewtwo, making it the 151st Pokémon caught as well as the first time since it began a year ago that Twitch Plays Pokémon has succeeded to “catch ’em all”.

For those unaware, Twitch Plays Pokémon is a Twitch channel and social experiment where one of Game Freak’s Pokémon games is played via crowdsourced commands parsed from the channel’s chat.

Last month, the stream went back to where it began, Pokémon Red, with a modified edition where the only way to complete the game is to collect all 151 Pokémon. After 39 hours, the game was completed with the capture of Mewtwo, seen below:

What was particularly spectacular about this capture was that the TPP players only had two Pokémon left with any HP — a level 100 Cloyster and a level 100 Slowbro — and it was Slowbro who was up when Mewtwo was caught. If you watched any Pokémon anime as a kid, you too are probably chuckling at the thought.

Despite many terrible things happening within the gaming Internet community, things like Twitch Plays Pokémon give a glimmer of hope for what our beloved community can do together. Sure, it may seem trivial and silly. But hey, it’s games!
