Watch Dogs Already Breaking Records

Perhaps all the PR stunts did work.

Ubisoft has been using some interesting methods to promote their new game Watch Dogs. Did they work? Apparently so, because Ubisoft has reported that Watch Dogs has given them their biggest opening day sales record. Their old record holder was Assassins Creed III that also continued to sell well up to 12.5 million copies in the first five months it was out.

While this is no Call of Duty: Ghosts or Grand Theft Auto V, it still marks a record for Ubisoft that CEO Yves Guillemot is very proud of.

Today we broke the record for the biggest first day sales in Ubisoft history. I can never say enough. Thank you everyone. We love you all for your passion and creativity.

Creative Director, Jonathan Morin, has cited the passion of the games early fans and the buzz they helped create for the game as a leading factor in how the game was able to deliver such an opening.

While it didn’t crack the top spot, it does go to show that some originality can carry weight in the gaming universe and compete with several of console gaming’s biggest heavyweights that also happen to be franchise games. Guillemot continued his praises;

It’s great to see so many customers enjoy playing the game and it shows that Watch Dogs has cracked the code for developing a new blockbuster IP and a thoroughly new-gen experience.

With a solid opening day of sales and solid reviews of Watch Dogs, it would be no surprise to see potential sequels to this game climbing the list of biggest one-day sellers, not to mention this game still has months to go before we really see its staying power compared to other games.
