What the Heck Is Bethesda Up To?

Viral marketing is my jam.

Last week, the mustache-twirling madmen over at Bethesda announced a new project aimed to intrigue and excite. Very few details have been released about the project, but vice President Pete Hines did share some teases with us in this month’s Xbox Magazine UK:

“I think you’ll hear us making considerably more noise this year than we did last year, as a publisher,” he said. “Obviously the Elder Scrolls Online is out and we’ve got the Dishonored DLC, but we will be announcing new stuff and making some noise, and I think when we get the chance to show you guys what we’re up to, that you’ll sit up and take notice.”

This announcement piqued my interest, but Bethesda now has my full, undivided attention. While teams officially said their goodbyes to Skyrim, someone was quietly submitting these videos to Bethesda’s Vine page.

The first video depicts a rotating series of barbed wire and the music for Bach’s orchestral suite, Air (On a “G” String) to the sounds of record scratches.

The second: a montage of extraordinarily creepy burning sunflowers, but the part that really makes me question the integrity of my bladder is the, oh, hanged man in the background that I didn’t notice for a solid minute.

So what exactly’s going on here? Is it the teaser everybody longs for?

Nope.

At this point, we know that Bethesda isn’t teasing a new Fallout game, and, while utterly heartbreaking, doesn’t mean I’m any less interested in what’s going on. If he’s not outright lying, the games on Bethesda’s plate right now include Doom 4, Prey 2, and the Elder Scrolls MMO. But this doesn’t mean that Bethesda isn’t quietly working on something new for the upcoming next-gen console release. (A Dishonored sequel, perhaps?) The Vine videos come from Bethesda Softworks, the publishing side of Bethesda, so they could indicate almost anything.

Frankly, I’m hoping Hines is a liar.
