If there’s any truth behind a recent classification from European ratings board PEGI, it’s possible that the long-dormant entry could see the light of day on modern machines. 

As first reported by Gematsu a few days ago via a screenshot on Twitter, Doom 64 has seemingly been rated for the PS4 and PC. The original entry found on the PEGI website carried a release date of July 26, 2019.

The now-removed listing, which rated the game as “16,” citing violence as the cause, can be seen below. 

Late last week, remasters of the original Doom, Doom 2, and Doom 3 were surprise-released on the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Doom and Doom 2 were also released on mobile devices; Doom 3 was not. 

Doom and Doom 2 support both online multiplayer deathmatch, as well as co-op. Each respectively brings its previously released expansions in Episode IV: Thy Flesh Consumed and the Master Levels. 

Currently, it’s unclear if Doom 64 was meant to release alongside the original trilogy or is set to come at a later date — if at all. As of this writing, there has been no official confirmation if the PEGI listing is accurate. 

Originally released in 1997 on the Nintendo 64, Doom 64 is a direct sequel to Final Doom. While it kept the core Doom experience intact, it, of course, took advantage of the N64’s then next-gen capabilities.  

Although other games in the franchise have received numerous ports, Doom 64 has stayed buried for the last 22 years. Seeing as this year marks the series’ 25th anniversary, and Doom Eternal looms on the horizon, 2019 is as good a year as any to resurrect the game.
