In a special Twitch stream, Wizards of the Coast gave their first official look at Ultimate Masters (UMA), a new premium Magic: The Gathering set that will be available beginning December 7.
As with previous Masters sets, Ultimate Masters is a set of reprints from Magic history, but, this time around, there is something new to be excited about: each box comes with a sealed Ultimate Box Topper containing one full-art foil promo.
There are 40 Ultimate Box Toppers, and they are as follows:
- Ancient Tomb
- Balefire Dragon
- Bitterblossom
- Cavern of Souls
- Celestial Colonnade
- Creeping Tarpit
- Dark Depths
- Demonic Tour
- Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
- Engineered Explosives
- Eternal Witness
- Fulminator Mage
- Gaddock Teeg
- Goryo’s Vengeance
- Karakas
- Karn Liberated
- Kitchen Finks
- Kozilek, Butcher of Truth
- Lavaclaw Reaches
- Leovold, Emissary of Trest
- Life from the Loam
- Liliana of the Veil
- Lord of Extinction
- Maelstrom Pulse
- Mana Vault
- Mikaeus, the Unhallowed
- Noble Hierarch
- Platinum Emperion
- Raging Ravine
- Reanimate
- Sigarda, Host of Herons
- Snapcaster Mage
- Stirring Wildwood
- Tasigur, the Golden Fang
- Tarmogoyf
- Temporal Manipulation
- Through the Breach
- Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre
- Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
- Vengevine
Boxes of Ultimate Masters will be available only at local game stores, and MSRP is $335.76 per box. Each box contains 24, 15-card booster packs, and each pack contains one premium foil.
Ultimate Masters will be available only in English and Japanese.
Additionally, 3-pack Ultimate Masters blister packs will be available at big-box stores for $34.99.
Ultimate Masters will also make its way to Magic: The Gathering Online on December 7. Packs will cost $6.99 and Ultimate Box Toppers will be available as random rewards from Treasure Chests.
Wizards will begin previews of the rest of the 254-card set beginning Monday, November 19, and a full image gallery of the set will be available on Wednesday, November 21.
During the stream, Wizards emphasized that this is a premium, collectible product, and it is not for everyone — something that is certainly confirmed by the price tag on Ultimate Masters.
While I would love to see future promos go in the direction of the gorgeous Ultimate Box Toppers, many of them are not big money cards, and it may be difficult for much of the player-base to justify the expense.
A full image gallery of the Ultimate Box Toppers is available on the Wizards of the Coast website, and here are a groups of our favorites.
