Wolfenstein is a pioneer in the first-person shooter genre. The franchise hasn’t been as relevant in recent years, but Bethesda will soon deliver a resurrection.

The publisher has announced that Wolfenstein: The New Order will launch in North America on May 20, 2014, and three days later in Europe. It will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC and if you pre-order, you can earn a spot in the upcoming DOOM beta. Yeah, that game exists.

In development at MachineGames, the fresh Wolfenstein effort is set in 1960 and somehow, the Nazi regime has won World War II thanks to mysterious next-level tech. It’s up to you to stop the spreading Nazi war machine, but the good news is that you’ll have a plethora of bad-ass weaponry at your fingertips. You’ll need all of it, too.

Strangely, the game won’t feature a multiplayer option, which is definitely an anomaly in the first-person shooter genre these days. However, MachineGames says they wanted to focus exclusively on the campaign and I say, “good for you!”

Wolfenstein can never really die

It might disappear for a while but it should never die. Although we’ve got plenty of shooters these days, it just wouldn’t be right to ditch the IP that – arguably – started it all. If you’re old enough, you recall Wolfenstein 3D and how it helped deliver the very concept of “first-person shooter” to the gaming public. Ah, memories.
