Ubisoft has officially announced Far Cry Primal, which is set to release on February 23 for PS4 and Xbox One, then in March on PC.

Far Cry Primal is a new game in the popular series and it will take players back to prehistoric times where you will fight wooly mammoths, rival tribes, and the environment in order to survive and prosper. You can check out the official announcement trailer below.

Far Cry Primal was teased yesterday on YouTube with a live stream of a cave painting, then it was accidentally announced via IGN Turkey’s Twitter page – which was then suspended. The game had been rumoured earlier in the year, but it seemed unlikely due to Far Cry 4 only having released last fall. Given the very quick turnaround, it’s obvious that Ubisoft handed the reigns of this spin-off to another internal dev team.

Set in 10,000 BC, Far Cry Primal puts you in the shoes of Takkar, “a seasoned hunter and the last surviving member of his hunting group.” In order to survive the dangerous land of Oros, players “will have to craft weapons and tools partly from the bones of slain beasts, hunt for food, master fire, fend off fierce predators and face off against other tribes to conquer Oros.”

It seems that Primal will follow many of the usual Far Cry tropes: hunting, killing and skinning animals, strategically taking down outposts, and upgrading your character. There are a few new features like using fire and corpses to attract animals. The art from the cave painting, however, does suggest you will have a sabretooth tiger as a companion. Yes, please! Check out this cool development video from Ubisoft where they discuss the game’s inspirations and aspirations.

Far Cry Primal is set to release in February and March of next year, which officially reveals it to be the AAA game Ubisoft referred to in its last investor report. The announcement of Primal means the spring release schedule is now more hectic than ever before. It seems that the success of Dying Light and Bloodborne, among others, have made studios realize that we will buy games at any point in the year, not just the fall.

Next spring will see the release of (in chronological order): Lego Marvel Avengers, The Witness, XCOM 2, Battleborn, Mighty No. 9, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Far Cry Primal, Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst, Tom Clancy’s: The Division, Hitman, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Quantum Break, Dark Souls III and more. And that isn’t even counting likely Q1 releases like Adr1ft, Doom, Star Fox Zero, and Ratchet & Clank. Basically a ton more games than any normal person can afford.
