Terraria (Wii U) release date confirmed

While a downsized version of Terraria has been on the 3DS for some time, Nintendo is finally getting the full version on Wii U

The 2D Minecraft-like game Terraria will be finally arriving on the Wii U on June 24th in Europe, and the 28th of June in North America. While the 3DS has had its own port since December of last year, the Wii U version will be the first on a Nintendo console to support all the features of the original.

The Wii U version of Terraria will be the first Nintendo version to support online multiplayer — a feature absent from the 3DS version due to hardware limitations. A number of other features that were not available on the 3DS version due to hardware will be included as well, such as:

  • 14 unique environments
  • Hundreds of craftable items
  • Over 150 enemy types
  • Grand scale boss battles
  • Wide open worlds to explore
  • 4 player split-screen co-op
  • 8 player online multiplayer

The Wii U version of Terraria is expected to be a near identical port to other console versions of the game with the exception of new features unique to the 3DS and Wii U. This included the ability to use the touchscreen to modify, build, and dig through the in-game environments.

Nintendo has been a little late to the party for Terraria, with many of the ports of the game having been released in 2013 and 2014. Terraria itself is 5 years old as of this month, and so the Wii U release is certainly a case of “better late than never”.
