Diablo 4 Release Date Won't Even Be "Blizzard Soon"
After a disappointing no-show at Blizzcon 2018, Diablo 4 was finally revealed at Blizzcon 2019. Fans the world over were treated to a nearly 10-minute cinematic trailer that unsurprisingly blew our socks off, as well as a three-minute gameplay trailer that showed plenty of in-game action.
At a panel following the reveal, Diablo 4 Game Director Luis Barriga confirmed that the game does not yet have a release date. More newsworthy is that Diablo 4 might not get a release date for some time.
Teasing what could be much larger future reveals, Barriga hinted that the Blizzcon 2019 footage shows very early days for Diablo 4.
There is much, much more to come. A game of this scope takes time. This is a very, very early first step. We're not coming out soon, not even Blizzard soon. We're just excited to take this first early step in the journey together with you.
Considering it has already been more than seven years since the release of Diablo 3, some fans are hoping it won't be another decade before the release of Diablo 4, even if the third installment has received updates and an expansion in that time.
Though Diablo 2 launched roughly four years after the first title in the series, it took Blizzard 12 more years to release Diablo 3. And if that's "Blizzard soon," it's anyone's guess what lies beyond that timeline.
While we don't when Diablo 4 will release, we do know some other things about the game. D4 will bring back customization via talent trees, skill points, and rune words, something fans of the series have hoped would make a return. And, to the chagrin of some, the grim RPG will require an always-online connection to play.
