Despicable Me: Minion Rush Review for Android

Being a minion has never been so fun!

I have recently decided to try out the currently free to play mobile game, Despicable Me: Minion Rush. I was stumbling around the Google Play store to find some games for my new Android phone (the first Android I have had in a long time), and this title was listed among one of their top free games. Besides, lets face it–those minions are just so darn cute!

This game is free to play with micropayments. It’s a running game much like the uber popular Temple Run game. The game starts off with a cute cut scene of our favorite little yellow bad-guy sidekicks. It sets up the basis for your storyline. These minions don’t just love doing their normal everyday evil assisting, but they also love getting minion of the month (and honestly, who wouldn’t?)

After this, you are helped along the first run with your minion. Most of the controls are pretty intuitive, especially if you have played anything similiar like Temple Run. You swipe up to jump, down to duck. Swiping right and left will move your guy over in each direction.

As you run along, you collect bananas (yellow guys love yellow things, after all). You can also knock over fellow minions to collect more points. Of course, obstacles stand in your way. The road you are running on itself is more of a plank suspended in air. You have no fence to hold you in from falling over the edge save for your own abilities. Bombs and other things can sometimes block your way.

As I progressed I came to a boss–Vector–who I was actually unable to beat no matter how many times I tried since I downloaded the game this week.

Despite that, I really enjoyed this game. Perhaps it’s my softness for cute animated characters, but the gameplay itself, besides my horrible skills, was really fun. The graphics are awesome, and the game has a lot of little details that makes even an adult laugh out loud. I can easily see how the micropayments might be tempting, especially when you die for the one millionth time in the same section, but I am determined to not let that pull me in as so many before me have in a similiar situation (*cough* I’m looking at you, Candy Crush. *cough*).

All in all, this game is a great download for either kids or adults!

I'm a 29 year old Jersey girl who loves games. I currently work full time, volunteer part time at this awesome non-profit called Amman Imman, and go to school part time. I also train in jiu jitsu. So time isn't quite on my side (unlike that song says). I have been trying unsuccessfully for years to clone myself so I can devote one of me to boring stuff like working and laundry - thus allowing more time for gaming. I'm willing to offer large sums of imaginary money to any who can make this happen.
