About a month and a half ago, I sat down in front of my computer to enjoy some coffee and some Facebook gossip, when I came across some free to play ads from SWTOR. Because I am an avid gamer and always get perked up at the word free, I clicked the link.
Ok, so eventually if you want to enjoy all the benefits of a game, and truly build a heroic character you will need to purchase a subscription. I mean I don’t want to halfway play a game.
The latest patch came out this week, 2.2 Operation Nightmare. This patch offers level 55 (top level characters) the chance to rally and defeat twelve new bosses. My character is only at level 53, so I can’t really speak to the end game content as of yet. My Jedi Guardian is steering towards being an elite tank, or so I hope. With many years playing a tank in World of WarCraft, I understand what it takes to hold aggro. You are not supposed to mention WoW when you are logged into SWTOR, which a lot of players will tell the “newbies” when they ask about the games comparisons.
Now here is how I see how the games stack up against each other: WoW is still top dog in performance, amount of players, missions, and ease of play (some will argue with me on this and I am cool with that). Even though Electronic Arts has taken over the gaming side of the now Disney owned franchise, there is a ton of room for improvement.
Yes EA games have large servers which offer more bandwidth than a lot of other software companies, and the company name is synonyms with winning game titles, they also have some failed ventures under their belts. I am personally hoping, as a lifelong fan of the Star Wars series, that EA puts a lot of emphasis into this title.
The true state of the game right now: Lag, yes plenty of it! I’ve had enemies targeted and before I can even lay my first strike, the target has miraculously left my sights and is pummeling my tag along healer. Needless to say, this is very frustrating. Now before you challenge my PC and my home network, let me just say that it is top notch. The world travel includes a lot of loading screens and ship changes, again not so much fun.
With all of the not so niceties out of the way, let me just say, I really like the game! The graphics are cool, and although sometimes I don’t read all of the interactive story line, the stories are neat when I do have the attention span for them. Alright so maybe I don’t have enough game time in to over analyze, these are just my impressions, a month and a half into SWTOR.
This game has the potential to be a big money maker, and might even put WoW to the test as far as active subscribers. With all of the new MMO games coming into the market, time is of the essence in keeping a gamers attention. EA games, the ball is in your court!
