TGS 2016: Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Gets Release Date, New Trailer & More

The final Kingdom Hearts compilation title will also apparently receive DLC support and possibly remove a most hated gameplay mechanic.

This year’s Tokyo Game Show technically hasn’t started yet, but Sony was ahead of the game by hosting a live-stream of their own press conference that revealed new titles and fresh details for upcoming games. For the Kingdom Hearts fans in the room, they got a nice serving of news regarding the final compilation title before Kingdom Hearts III comes out.

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (a title so dumb even the fans make fun of it) is now confirmed to be releasing on January 24th 2017 in North America and Europe, as shown in a fancy new trailer that also features a new remix of the first game’s theme song, ‘Simple and Clean’ by Utada Hikaru.

The compilation will contain an HD remaster of the 3DS title, Dream Drop Distance, and Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage, a sort of sequel to the PSP game that centers around the character Aqua and what she was up to whilst trapped in the Realm of Darkness.

There will also be a completely original movie that depicts the events of the mobile game, Kingdom Hearts χ [chi], that shows “never-before-revealed scenes” about the five foretellers. It’s essentially an origin story for the entire series.

Aside from that, some other interesting details have also been discovered, courtesy of the site Kingdom Hearts Insider. Apparently, the official website for the game has been updated and confirms that the game will receive DLC support of some kind in the future. What this DLC could be is completely unknown at this time.

There’s also speculation regarding the Drop Gauge from KH 3D. For those that don’t know, the Drop Gauge was a key gameplay component that greatly frustrated many players, as it would force you to switch between characters once it depleted, regardless of what you were doing at the time.

Recent screenshots of the game, however, show the gauge completely absent, with the rest of the HUD still intact. Has it been removed completely? Will there be an option to turn it off? We’ll probably have to wait till January to find out.
