Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Get the Staff of Cherished Necromancy

If you play a Necromancy Wizard, one staff stands above the rest as a desirable weapon for you. Naturally, you need to complete a side quest that deals with the undead. Here’s how to get the Staff of Cherished Necromancy in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to Get the Staff of Cherished Necromancy in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Staff of Cherished Necromancy gives enemies Disadvantage on Saving Throws against Necromancy Spells and gives its wielded stacks of Life Essence when they kill an enemy.

Find Philgrave’s Mansion

First, go to Philgrave’s Mansion in Lower City. You find it to the south of Sorcerous Sundries. Then, enter and talk to Mystic Carrion, offering him your services. He asks you to bring him the body of Thrumbo, but refuses to give you much information beyond that.

Talk with Thrumbo

Onto finding Thrumbo. He’s hiding in a house right by the docks to the east of Philgrave’s Mansion. To help, I circled it on the map below. Inside the house, open the big wardrobe, and Thrumbo runs out. Speak with him about Mystic Carrion and agree to kill him after finding his heart.

Find the Mystic Carrion’s Heart

The Mystic Carrion’s heart hides in the Ancient Lair, which you can get to from the Undercity Ruins Waypoint. Go directly west and enter the passageway. After fighting through mummies and looting chests, find the hidden door on the north wall and enter the secret room. Read “Funerary Jar Form and Function” on the table, then return to Thrumbo and tell him Mystic Carrion’s organs are hidden in his zombies.

Kill Mystic Carrion

Thrumbo vomits up the jar with the heart in it, letting you destroy it. Note that it explodes when you hit it, so make sure you aren’t low on hit points. After that, return to Mystic Carrion and kill him, then loot his body. Since his heart is destroyed, he and all his minions are hostile towards you when you enter the mansion. Most minions are fairly weak, so it’s not a terrible battle, especially with AoE Spells.

And that’s how to get the Staff of Cherished Necromancy in Baldur’s Gate 3. Mystic Carrion also drops Armor of the Sporekeeper and Veil of the Morning, which are both Very Rare items.
