Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Recruit Hirelings

Hirelings are the only way to customize your party outside of Origin characters and multiplayer in Baldur's Gate 3.

Let’s say you’re tired of the game’s Origin companions, and you want something a little different for your party in Baldur’s Gate 3, something a little less chatty and functionally distinct. If so, you’ll want to make use of the Hirelings that Withers has for recruitment. In this guide, we’ll go over how to recruit Hirelings in Baldur’s Gate 3 to make your own custom class combos.

How to Recruit Hirelings in Baldur’s Gate 3

You recruit Hirelings Baldur’s Gate 3 by freeing Withers from the Dank Crypt below the Chapel near the beach at the beginning of the game, talking to him, making room in your party, and hiring one for 100 gold.

  • Withers has 12 different Hirelings to choose from.
  • There’s a Hireling of each class, but you’ll have to accept what they look like.
  • It costs 100 gold to add one to your party.
  • They can’t be romanced.

Before you can add a Hireling to your party, you’ll need to make room. The maximum party size in Baldur’s Gate 3 is four characters. You’ll need to talk to any Origin characters you want to remove from the party and tell them to wait at camp before you can enter the recruitment menu.

Once you have a free party slot, talk to Withers to see the list of Hireling options. There’s one for each class, and you’ll be able to choose their subclasses as they level, just as you would with the main character and your companions. You’ll need to pay 100 gold each time you recruit a Hireling, which isn’t a bad price for a shiny new party member. To dismiss a Hireling, simply talk to them at camp to send them off.

That’s how to recruit Hirelings in Baldur’s Gate 3. This is the only way to make a party consisting of a custom combination of classes outside of the Origin characters you come across on your travels. It’s cheap and easy, but even I admit I’m not fond of most of the Hirelings’ appearances. Hopefully, modders will give us better options in the future. Check out some of our other BG3 guides here.
