Final Fantasy 16: How to Unlock Fast Travel

Our Final Fantasy 16 fast travel guide discusses the Obelisks, and when you'll get to unlock this function.

The Final Fantasy 16 fast travel system won’t be available at the start of the game. Instead, you’ll need to progress a bit further, at least a few hours into the campaign. Our Final Fantasy 16 fast travel guide discusses the Obelisks, and when you’ll get to unlock this function.

How to Unlock Fast Travel Obelisks in Final Fantasy 16

The FF16 fast travel function is done by way of the Obelisks that you tag and encounter in the game. This mechanic is introduced a few hours into the campaign, during the Louder Than Words quest. This entails leaving the Hideaway hub for the first time to head to The Greatwood, followed by Orabelle Downs.

After beating the Midnight Raven boss and arriving at Orabelle Downs, Clive and co. will notice an Obelisk nearby. Clive will walk up to it, activating your first fast travel point. From here onward, every Obelisk that you come across will essentially get tagged or activated.

There are a couple of ways to make use of the fast travel method in the game:

  • Press start and go to the world map tab to see all the Obelisks that you’ve unlocked. Alternatively, you can press the touchpad to see the area map, then the start button to open the world map.
  • When leaving locations or upon concluding chapters, the world map will be shown, allowing you to pick another location.
  • The Hideaway hub also acts as it’s own fast travel point.

Do take note that fast travel isn’t available at certain stages, mostly due to storyline restrictions. As such, I had to progress further until I was allowed to go to certain areas.

Also, even though the campaign might seem linear at first, there are side quests and hunts that require you to revisit certain places. In fact, once you’ve unlocked the Alliant Reports mechanic, which shows various side quests, you’ll be able to directly teleport to the nearest Obelisk. As such, the Obelisks you’ve discovered will make exploration smoother.

And that’s it, that’s everything you need to know about the fast travel system in Final Fantasy 16. For more tips and strategies, you can visit our FF16 guides hub.
