How to Find and Kill Mutated Enemies in Fallout 76

Here's how to find and kill mutants in the wasteland of Fallout 76.

Mutants are a frequent occurrence in Fallout. With most creatures, enemies, and even people effected by radiation, it can be hard to determine just what counts as a mutant for Fallout 76‘s dailies and weeklies. This is how to find and kill mutated enemies in Fallout 76.

Unfortunately, Super Mutants don’t count towards finding and killing a mutant challenge. However, finding the correct mutants in FO76 is easier than it sounds. There are two ways to encounter them: During double mutation events and in Daily Ops.

Double mutation events occur randomly throughout the year. Often announced on the quarterly roadmap and in the news before they go live, these events occur at the top of the hour. The enemies you encounter have different mutations and killing them counts towards the challenge.

If no events are occurring when this challenge appears for you, you’ll need to start a Daily Op. These can be difficult solo, or for newer players. If you only need a couple of enemies, you can start one, kill the required number, and then exit. If you want to complete the op, I suggest joining up with a strong teammate to get the job done.

Once you find some mutants, you need to kill them. This is usually the same as taking out the enemies normally. Some mutations, however, cause different effects that may stop you from dealing the final blow. Resilient is one such mutation. It requires a melee strike to kill the target.

Complete Mutated Enemies Mutations List

  • Active Camouflage: Enemies are cloaked when not attacking.
  • Freezing Touch: Slow targets down upon attack.
  • Group Regeneration: Enemies heal each other when within radius.
  • Reflective Skin: Enemies periodically reflect back damage dealt to them.
  • Resilient: Enemies can only be killed with a melee attack.
  • Savage Strike: Enemies bypass armor resistances.
  • Swift Footed: Increased movement and attack speed.
  • Toxic Blood: Enemies leave behind small poisonous hazard upon death.
  • Volatile: Enemies explode upon death.

Daily Ops also have a special mutation specific to them: Piercing Gaze. This greatly enhances the perception of all enemies. It won’t show up on the enemy name, but it’s still in effect during the op.
