The coolest hedgehog around gets heated up for Sega's next Sonic Boom game

Sonic and friends are headed into another Sonic Boom adventure on the 3DS.

What does a game company do when their newest spin-off franchise barely manages to get a 47 on Metacritic? According to Sega, release a sequel.

Today the Nintendo's YouTube channel released an announcement trailer for Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice (above). The video provides one minute of gameplay footage for Sonic's next adventure in the Sonic Boom universe. The video highlights the game's new mechanic involving - you guessed it - fire and ice. From what is visible in the footage it seems that fire will be used primarily to destroy stage obstacles while ice will create new paths for characters to cross. Also new to the 3DS version of Sonic Boom is Amy Rose as a member of the playable roster, an addition that should please... somebody.

The game is already receiving some flak from fans of the Sonic the Hedgehog series as the YouTube video's comments section is now filled with posts mocking the game's headline "What do you get when you mix fire and water?", while others speculate on what has possessed Sega to greenlight a new Sonic Boom game.

While a release date has not been announced as of yet for Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice, it is likely a game that devoted fans will skip over considering the relatively new spin-off franchise's notorious of glitches and poor sales. With fans begging for a new Sonic title that does not disappoint, only time will tell if Sega's latest Sonic title will drown the Blue Blur once and for all.

This will be the game everybody rages at. It doesn't matter how good it is, it'll just be used as a comparison when people say "My favorite game doesn't get a sequel, but Sonic Boom does?!"

It is disappointing just how little effort Sega put into a game that clearly meant so much in terms of a brand relaunch with Sonic, complete with matching animated series.

Oh, and quick side note, wasn't Amy playable in the last game?

Amy was playable in the Wii U Rise of Lyric game, while Sticks was available in the 3DS Shattered Crystal game.

Can't wait to see if Gamegrumps does a playthrough of this one too. That first series was a comedic godsend.

I really wish JonTron was still on there. The new guy's great and all, but I feel like Jon and Arin had more chemistry as a duo.

Dear God why are they making another one.

Sonic Team was rumored to be making a new, real Sonic game. Sonic Boom was absolutely terrible -- but then again, I'm sure SEGA want to keep tying it into the show. One has to wonder how well merchandising did for the Sonic Boom show/game.

In the end, not even another terrible Sonic Boom game will kill Sonic. He survived through 06, all those terrible streamlined Wii iterations (sans Colors), and his lackluster games after that. Two terrible non-Sonic Team console Sonic games in a row won't kill him either.

Here's to hoping SOMETHING of Sonic Team's game comes to light this year, though. Sadly I can only hope it will be mediocre, but as long as I can actually go fast I can't complain much.

From what it *looks* like so far the game has some speed in it. It reminds me of Sonic Rush, but then again I didn't much like that series either. I think Sonic Advance 2 did the best out of the hand-held series thus far.

I haven't played any of the Sonic Boom titles personally, but all I've heard is negative criticism. For once I'll stick with the popular opinion though, I don't think (based on the gameplay I have seen) that it's something I'd pick up.
