There are several truly interesting new commanders in The Brothers' War, the latest event set for Magic: The Gathering. Two of them are especially siginificant to the game's lore (Urza and Mishra), but most will find a niche of their own in competitive EDH for sure.
There are no new combos except the three Meld options, but there are plenty of new combo enablers that could really quicken things up for you, if you've already been looking for such opportunities.
Here is a list of the best 15 MtG cards for commander format that have been introduced in The Brothers' War set.
There have been spells in the past that remove graveyards, and there have been spells that silence players, but this is the first time both effects are combined in a single card.
This card will be especially interesting to the Artifacts players with Morophon, the Boundless commander; and Soldiers Tribal with Myrel, Shield of Argive commander.
Calamity's Wake will have a huge impact against all sorts of Storm decks, as well as lists that rely on combos with a number of noncreature spells.
The first ability on defabricate is nothing special, but the second one is the stifle effect, and that one is always welcome in an EDH environment, where cancelling fetchland triggers can be very important in the early game. It can also target mana rocks and block some trigger-based combos.
This will go straight into the Blue-White Artifacts deck with Urza, Prince of Kroog commander. But also expect to see it in Dimir, Izzet, Esper, and Jund lists among many others.
The newest Urza card is definitely one of the best new commanders an EDH format has seen in the last few sets.
Players can combine Urza, Lord Protector with Sensei's Divining Top and The Reality Chip to get infinite card draw, infinite draw triggers, and plenty of storm counters. Note that all three permanents must be on the table, and The Reality Chip needs to be attached to a creature you control.
The combo can go off as soon as turn 3 or 4!
Swords to Plowshares but in black!
Some say it's even better, because it targets planeswalkers, where Swords have no say. This is a good day for all EDH players who play in black and want to exile enemy creatures or planeswalkers for potentially only one black mana.
Overwhelming Remorse is currently making rounds in Rakdos decks with Mishra, Tamer of Mak Fawa commander; Dimir Reanimator decks with Araumi of the Dead Tide commander; Mono Black lists with Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor commander; and many others.
Although this is a legendary creature, it may not be suitable for the role of a commander. However, it has good abilities that will be of great use in the 99, especially the tap ability, which draws you cards each turn.
Loran of the Third Path will be mainly used in Mardu decks with Queen Marchesa commander, and White Blue lists with The Council of Four commander that are especially interested in this card's draw mechanic.
Caustic Caterpillar and Outland Liberator can now rest, as there is a new "working horse" that can deal with artifacts and enchantments, albeit only noncreature ones.
Haywire Mite is extremely cheap at only one mana, and it exiles artifacts and enchantments, which is much better solution than just piling those up in an opponent's graveyard.
This will see play in Dredge lists with Muldrotha, the Gravetide commander; Golgari decks with Glissa, the Traitor and Grist, the Hunger Tide commanders; as well as many others.
If you don't have the time to deal with each artifact or creature separately, then here is a solution for both of those problems. The first ability is also stronger than the Anger of the Gods, which doesn't target planeswalkers.
With this one card you can quickly deal with token-based lists or quickly remove all of the opponent's mana rocks. Either way it can be used in a vast number of red decks.
The new Mishra card can be either a commander or find its way into your 99. Either way it will do well!
There is currently a solid combo with this card that combines Mishra, Tamer of Mak Fawa, Void Maw, and Composite Golem (or Myr Battlesphere). You need to put either Composite Golem or Myr Battlesphere into your graveyard, and have Mishra and Void Maw stay on board. You also need to have at least three mana available, including black and red mana.
As a result, you can get an infinite amount of tokens and mana, so try it out.
If you want to make Myrel your commander, then she would be perfect for a Mono White soldier tribal build with some fantastic results.
But if you want to include her in your 99, then here are a few suggestions:
Boros doesn't usually have complicated win conditions, but this new commander card offers some spice to the typically very aggressive archetype.
Of course, the card insists that you play large amount of cheap creatures, and fortunately, there's plenty of those in both red and white colors. You could also include WInota or Kiki-Jiki to the 99 and see how it goes alongside Kayla's tap ability.
Also, note that Kayla's effect ignores Rest in Peace effect, and still puts those creatures on board.
Dockside Extortionist players rejoice, as here is another combo enabler for infinite treasure tokens and subsequently infinite mana.
Of course, your opponents need to have at least six artifacts or enchantments on their side of the table, if you want the combo to go as intended. Then, play Meticulous Excavation and Dockside Extortionist. Use Meticulous Excavation to return Dockside Extortionist to your hand and repeat the cycle.
You can also try it out in Selesnya Enchantments deck with Sythis, Harvest's Hand commander, if you're sick of Dockside combos in EDH.
Grixis commanders are infamously combo-centric, and Ashnod the Uncaring is not an exception.
You can enable an infinite number of ETBs, death and untap triggers by combining Ashnod the Uncaring with Whisper, Blood Liturgist and Intruder Alarm.
Play all three cards and make sure that Whisper is not affected by the summoning sickness. You should also have at least two nontoken creatures on board and in your graveyard. Then, you can start activating the triggers.
You can also try Ashnod in the Grixis Artifacts deck with Mishra, Eminent One commander.
Now here's something a little bit more straightforward that doesn't require immense set-ups before things start happening.
Sardian Avenger would be a great addition to the Mono Red Goblins deck with Krenko, Mob Boss commander, where it can benefit from all the tribal synergies and its own artifact hate effects.
Since EDH format is flooded with lists that utilize treasure tokens, Sardian Avenger players will have lots of good games this season.
This is not a usual removal spell, and yet it is a perfect combo breaker.
Soul Partition will typically be played in Mono White decks with Heliod, Sun-Crowned commander, where this effect can really provide the necessary time for executing its own gameplan.
But it can also be included in two-color lists that use white mana, which is mostly control archetypes.
Protection from everything sounds about right for a format where deadly combos appear like mushrooms after rain.
Having one such coffin in your 99 would never hurt, and taking into account that it's colorless, makes it playable in almost every single archetype.
There are two decks, however, that would love The Stasis Coffin more than others: Grixis Artifacts with Mishra, Eminent One commander, and Azorius Artifacts with Urza, Lord Protector.
