"Does something look odd to you?" - Disproportionate characters in gaming

1 of 8

Have you ever noticed something off about some of your favorite video games characters? Whether it's a stylistic choice or a slip-up with scale, there is something about these characters that looks a bit off.

I am by no means saying the following characters are poorly designed, they just have certain enlarged or smallish features about them that we can't help but notice.

The COGs (Gears of War series)

On the planet Sera, not only are steroids completely legal, but they are mandatory. Marcus Fenix and company look primed to burst into an explosion of manly bro-ness at any vein-pulsing second. You know, the Locusts might have actually been threatening if their human adversaries weren't already built like the Incredible Hulk on Muscle Milk.

 Sorceress (Dragon's Crown)

BOOBS! You thought the early Lara Croft was stacked? HA! The Sorceress from Dragon's Crown makes poor Lara and the entire cast of Soul Calibur 4 look like prepubescent boys. How she gets around without having to wear a back brace is a miracle, but then again, her lofty bosom is probably where she stores her magic. So you know, there's practicality to her bustiness.

 Larry (Leisure Suit Larry)

Oh Larry, the poor little bachelor just can't catch a break! All he wants is to finally score himself a hot babe, but with a head that large and a body that small, accomplishing that will happen about as often as spotting Bigfoot riding on the back of the Loch Ness Monster. But hey, you know what they say about having a big head, right...? Yeah, I don't, either.

Bayonetta (Bayonetta)

I do enjoy the Bayonetta games, but something about her is well...kinda freakish. With her incredibly tall stature, Bayonetta's head always seemed really small in comparison. Although maybe this was intentional, it's one of those things that once you notice, you can't stop looking at it.

Jim Raynor (Star Craft)

We like em' gruff and we like em' buff. Especially when we take somebody already super massively huge and put them in an even more super massively huge suit or armor! OH, MY GAAAWWWD! Move over Marcus Fenix: Jim Raynor makes the COGs look like a little league team playing softball at a Sunday picnic! MANSPLOSION!

Ryo (Shenmue series)

Alright, on first glance, you might think I'm reaching on this one, but hear me out, Ryo is a disproportionate mess that deserves his spot on this list, too. Just look at him, take a long hard look. Do you not see anything a tad out of the ordinary? I don't know, maybe his arms look a little too long or his torso looks a bit too short? That's right, now you're seeing it, aren't you? Maybe Ryo shouldn't have been seeking revenge on Lan Di, but on the blind character designer that decided to give him the limbs of a chimp.

But then again, Ryo's got bigger issues than disproportionate limbs.

Are there any other characters that look slightly...off? If so, let me know in the comments!

Yes. The legs are too long. The feet are too large. The heads are too small. The chest pillows are too... uh hem... It looks funny when things are a little off. Then again...

I live in reality all day long. Every day. It sucks. I play games to escape said reality. I personally feel that the new game makers' mantra of "We can make it look real, therefore we HAVE TO make it look real" is kind of ruining gaming for me. So if things are little off, it actually helps. I say, bring it on. Do it more. Send in the super-morphs. Flip realism the finger and put a little fantasy back into fantasy gaming.

*this has been a personal opinion. Individual results may vary...

You know, it comes from japan bruh, expect boobs to be drawn disproportionally large...its probably from all that dragon magic shes been casting, that shit has side affects like the average warlocks and witches aging like hamsters after using a bunch of magic at once. But im sure some have much better ways it reyouthafy themselves into young again to keep their bodies immortal

No, no, no, i believe theres nothing wrong with the artistic style of japanese anime fluxing into gaming, if anything people need to stop whining and start playing but in debate functions...there are a few things that could be different, but breast size is the least of those concerns as im focused on the characters personality over their looks, regardless of the gender and their looks with some exceptions of artistic design, for example: if im playing as something that looks like it crawled out of a nightmare fuel cavern of ugliness and it calls itself legitimately beautiful then its either an inside joke or someone doesnt understand that beautiful doesnt mean that of which that keeps me up at night locking my door and turning on all the lights in a cocoon of bed sheets holding a crucifix and a flamethrower going "its all in my head" while checking around the house because i saw something resembling the aweful character lurking...

The bottom line is put like this way

    Remember dantes inferno? Great game

The original dante was a badass equivalent to deadpool (as seen in marvel vs capcom 3) but in the third one they remade him into something...emoish...like his fucking looks were remade so much i thought who the f+*$ is this panzy? Where art thou dante? But nope! It was!

I think to be explicitly honest, coming from an artist, that you should respect any and all art no matter how taboo you may find it because that was drawn, i bet in your petty mortal life you would never even come close to something drawn so detailed that it shatters reality and pulls you into another world with rules entirely different, no laws of reality to bind you down or keep you from going on an adventure. Which is why im psyched for the legend of zelda, why? Because to put it simple!

It is purely exploring and wandering into a world where excitement and adventure awaits! The sheer glee of finding a dungeon youve never seen before appear is that of pure joy when you take on the challenge and enter it not knowing what youre in store for. I love all games but exploring and adventuring are one of my favorites in gaming because it really allows for the most exciting playthroughs...well besides the binding of isaac which literally has infinite replayability as all the floors and rooms randomize along with items monsters bosses and secrets...so looking forward to the afterbirth update and also looking forward to another metroid game because samus is one of me badass bounty hunters also part of a picture where masterchief killzone and samus in her full body suit of kickassness are standing in the mother of all badass positions, literally a trio that could take on galactikon

and then have a drink and each complain how too easy it was for each of them

    "i only used one gun"

"i literally was using only one hand the entire time, couldve done it without all my suit functions"

"i didnt get to use betty the rocket launcher 😢 one day betty the rocket launcher, one day you shall be needed again, and youll make puppies happy and flowers on a field grow...as you destroy something very big"

Well I never said there was anything wrong with these designs. I was just pointing out certain aspects of different character designs that look a bit unusual.

If someone wants to draw a character with giant breasts or one with an incredibly small head, then so be it. But the point of this list was just for fun, not a serious critique of someone's art design. I'm sorry that you felt otherwise or were offended.

You're right, in fact, I can't draw worth a damn. However, I do have respect for artists of all kinds.

    Master O' Bugs
Haha, it all makes sense now, Sorceress uses her magic to deal with those balloons.

    That's the only possible explanation!

Should have mentioned how Jim Raynor (and marines in general for that matter) shouldn't be able to fit inside their suits since the in-game models aren't designed to house their in-game out-of-suit bodies. :P

Funny that you mentioned that. When I was writing the article, my boyfriend pointed out how his arms wouldn't be able to fit inside the suit!
