With the PlayStation Meeting coming on February 20, there has been a lot of news going around about Sony's next console. A new console is exciting, but another Vita model is quite the opposite.

Despite being an impressive piece of technology, the Vita's game library leaves something to be desired. Why toss in a whole new model of a handheld that is -- frankly -- doing poorly and lacking in software? The concept of playing a Vita on an actual television is enticing, but we need actual games to take advantage of the new HDMI port.

The patent was filed with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office on February 7. Being so close to the PlayStation Meeting, it seems likely this new model will also be announced alongside the PlayStation 4.

Maybe it will be "a" controller, rather than "the" controller. I could have been more clear about my point. I think that it is likely to be an option and probably one of a couple of options, such as plain old Dual Shock controllers.

I could see it being used as something like the Wii U controller, but the PlayStation 4 controller has already been revealed as being a revamped Dual Shock-style controller with a small touch screen in the middle. That said, they do have the technology to do so considering the strides they've made with the PS3 and Vita connectivity.

The Vita, or something similar, could be the controller for the next gen Playstation. Given the way they have positioned the Vita as a device you can continue playing the game after you walk away I think that there is a good chance the Vita will be the controller.
