SaGa Frontier, a cult-classic PS1 RPG by Square Enix, is getting remastered for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PC via Steam, and mobile devices. SaGa Frontier Remastered is expected to release in Summer 2021 and features more than just updated graphics.

SaGa Frontier Remastered makes Fuse a playable protagonist, bringing the number of playable character up to eight. Some characters, including Asellus, are getting new scenes and events cut from the original game.

Romancing SaGa 2 introduced the Glimmer method of teaching new skills, called Sparking in Scarlet Grace, where characters could learn a random skill through combat or by training at a dojo. Square Enix is adding that back into SaGa Frontier Remastered to offer even more character customization options.

SaGa Frontier first came to North America in 1998 on the PlayStation 1. Like Octopath Traveler, which drew inspiration from the SaGa games, Frontier follows eight separate stories. Unlike Octopath Traveler, it’s mostly non-linear, with potential for scores of different events and story paths depending on choices made.

In North America, SaGa always existed under the shadow of its sibling Final Fantasy, but Square Enix seems intent on bringing the series to a new audience with remasters and ports. 2019 saw Romancing SaGa 3 come to modern consoles, and we even consider it one of the top RPGs on the Switch.
