With the release of the new Magic: The Gathering set Phyrexia: All Will Be One, Wizards of the Coast introduces a new type of art, known as "Oil Slick". This rare type of art will be available only in the Compleat Edition of the set with some really high initial pricing.

Phyrexia: All Will Be One is shaping up to be a unique MtG set, as it brings back Phyrexian mana and poison counters, as well as some truly impactful new planeswalkers and Phyrexian creatures.

All this makes Phyrexia a highly marketable standard set, and here we'll go over its most expensive cards. Note that the listed prices correspond to the date of this article's publishing: February 03, 2023.

Sword of Forge and Frontier

  • Regular art price: $22.82
  • Oil slick art price: $96.47

A new sword has arrived in Phyrexia: All Will Be One that protects players from green and red colors. There is also a neat card draw ability, making it one of the best new artifacts in the set.

It is currently being eyed by various commander and modern players. Since these types of swords always show good results in both competitive play and on the market, it looks like Sword of Forge and Frontier will have a decent chance to keep its starting price of around $20.

Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus

  • Regular art price: $15.50
  • Oil slick art price: $96.90

A blue Phyrexian Horror has all the makings of a great card fitting a range of formats, including commander, standard, and pioneer.

Many EDH players don't see it as a commander in itself, but rather a solid addition to the Simic list with Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres, which relies heavily on the Proliferate mechanic.

It will undoubtedly have an impact on the current meta, especially if you take into account its ability to become indestructible. With all this in mind, there is a big chance that Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus may go up in price to about $25 a piece.

Nissa, Ascended Animist

  • Regular art price: $8.60
  • Oil slick art price: $97.61

The new Nissa planeswalker had a solid initial price of about $30 per card, but the price dwindled significantly since the reveal. Though the oil slick foils are still quite expensive.

There's no doubt it will be played in commander, most likely as a part of 99, as well as in standard. You will probably see it in the Witch lists with Atraxa, Praetors' Voice, as one of the "superfriends" that benefits from the proliferate mechanic.

But other than that, Nissa, Ascended Animist may very well lose all of its market steam sooner rather than later.

All Will Be One

  • Regular art price: $12.40
  • Oil slick art price: $99.00

The central thematic enchantment of the new set is definitely cool and can be compared to Imminent Doom from the Hour of Devastation set. Unfortunately Imminent Doom had no serious effect on meta. All Will Be One is different and easier to use, so there is still a chance.

The initial reaction of the market was pessimistic, and the card traded at about $5 a piece, but when more cards with Proliferate mechanic started to emerge it became clear that All Will Be One could actually work. Still it is really hard to tell which way the card will go from here.

Ichormoon Gauntlet

  • Regular art price: $22.58
  • Oil slick art price: $113.48

This is a bizarre one, and hopefully it won't get banned right away from most of the competitive formats. The potential in this card is immense, making the market absolutely love it from the moment it was revealed.

It will be huge in commander, as that's where crazy effects like this can really be executed. If the Ichormoon Gauntlet survives the ban hammer, then this could actually be a very good investment in the long run.

Vraska, Betrayal's Sting

  • Regular art price: $6.26
  • Oil slick art price: $126.12

Just like the new Nissa planeswalker, this Vraska iteration will have some short-lived hype and then disappear in oblivion.

The market reacted to Vraska in the same way as Nissa, and the price drop was just as steep. The only difference is that initially investors had a much higher hope for Vraska, Betrayal's Sting. It started at $50 per card, which says a lot about the impact of this planeswalker on the community.

Jace, the Perfected Mind

  • Regular art price: $9.15
  • Oil slick art price: $126.98

Modern players love Jace planeswalkers, and this one will not be an exception with yet another set of tools for mill deck enthusiasts.

By no means will this card become big in any other format, maybe except pioneer. And even then, the mill mechanic has never had much competitive success. It's likely this card will lose its value soon enough after the release.

The oil slick variant, on the other hand, may survive due to its unusual and rare art piece.

Mondrak, Glory Dominus

  • Regular art price: $40.23
  • Oil slick art price: $127.59

Mondrak, Glory Dominus has all the makings of a fantastic new mono white commander that will benefit an entire plethora of token-based spells in EDH.

It can also do well in standard, although there is no clear understanding on how exactly it fares against all the toxic decks that will surely be the dominant force in the upcoming meta.

Still the effect is very powerful and it's perfectly castable at 4 mana, which may give a signal to investors that this card may indeed preserve its $40 price tag.

Phyrexian Vindicator

  • Regular art price: $14.28
  • Oil slick art price: $149.00

There is a heated debate among the Magic community whether Phyrexian Vindicator is better than the Phyrexian Obliterator, which requires players to sacrifice creatures instead of dealing damage. It looks like Phyrexian Vindicator wins!

But don't try to buy out as many copies of Phyrexian Vindicator as you can, as the market is getting colder and colder towards this mono-white Phyrexian Horror. The price has fallen by at least 50% in the last two weeks and keeps going down.

Drivnod, Carnage Dominus

  • Regular art price: $13.62
  • Oil slick art price: $149.99

This card was clearly designed for commander format, absolutely begging you to use the last ability that makes it indestructible to make up for that three toughness.

Drivnod, Carnage Dominus will go straight into Orzhov commander deck with Teysa Karlov that has a similar effect, and thus could easily utilize Drivnod in its 99.

Drivnod also has better chances of keeping its current price than Phyrexian Vindicator, as it simply looks much more investment-friendly.

Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines

  • Regular art price: $46.15
  • Borderless art price: $213.05

At one point, the regular art of Elesh Norn had been evaluated at $90 a piece. The price has been corrected to about half of that, and it looks like the market has stabilized.

It is also important to note that the borderless art of Elesh Norn is rarer than slick oil art, and thus more expensive. Actually, there are currently ten different art variants of this card costing around $100 each, so keep an eye out on this Phyrexian Praetor.

Those are the most expensive cards in Phyrexia: All Will Be One. For more Magic: The Gathering content, card lists, and guides, head over to our MtG hub page here.
