Countdown to EVE Online Fanfest

Ten years of internet spaceships, half a million subscribers, a history of industry firsts. There's a whole lot to celebrate at the Party on Top of the World.

Once a year, hordes of internet spaceship enthusiasts converge on a barely hospitable piece of volcanic rock on the northern edge of the Atlantic Ocean to celebrate Iceland’s premier digital export, EVE Online. These capsuleers have undertaken this pilgrimage to Fanfest for many years and are likely to continue to do so for many more.

But this year is special: the single-sharded game universe of New Eden will have been in existence for a full decade. Its sprawling network of star systems has played host to thousands of player-led dramas; exciting discoveries, bitter betrayals and epic battles.

Along with its unrivalled community, it is of EVE Online‘s history and its legacy that its creator, CCP Games, are most proud and they know how to celebrate it in style.

Over the years, Fanfest has grown from a modest gathering of players content with a few Powerpoint presentations and some beer, to a sprawling confluence of design workshops, technology showcases, community discussions and marketing flair which takes place over three days (and nights) – all centred around one game universe [the recent integration of DUST 514 muddies these waters somewhat].

The Odyssey Begins Here

With less than two weeks to go, the official schedule is still to be released, but CCP Games has been releasing nuggets of information to tantalise the information-hungry playerbase. Rumours are already abound regarding details of the upcoming Summer expansion, Odyssey. It is a certainty that CCP’s cards will be held close and played to maximum effect at the keynote presentations at the Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik between 25th-27th April.

Fortunately, GameSkinny have despatched their best capsuleer (stop laughing at the back) to provide up-to-the-minute coverage of all the best bits. Also, we’ll be counting down these final few days to Fanfest by taking a daily look at the key points of anticipation and expectation of revelations which will usher in EVE Online: The Second Decade.

Only 12 days ’til lift off.

Broken paramedic and coffee-drinking Englishman whose favourite dumb animal is an oxymoron. After over a decade of humping and dumping the fat and the dead, my lower spine did things normally reserved for Rubik's cubes, bringing my career as a medical clinician to an unexpectedly early end. Fortunately, my real passion is in writing and given that I'm now highly qualified in the art of sitting down, I have the time to pursue it. Having blogged about video games (well, mostly EVE Online) for years, I hope to channel my enjoyment of wordcraft and my hobby of gaming into one handy new career that doesn't involve other people's vomit.
