5 games that prove video games can be art

1 of 7

I guess the first thing I should say is that this article IS NOT A RANKING. By that I mean I am not ranking the top 5 most beautiful video games. There are probably better-looking video games out there than the few I am about to mention. However, the ones I am going to mention are pretty beautiful in their own right.

I wanted to write this article because video games ARE art. If you don’t believe in that statement, then take the next few games for example. The games that make you ooh and ahh as a gamer are the ones where you know, deep down, video games should be considered art. Let us take a moment to admire the beautiful side of the gaming world.

Games being art isn't really in question.
The only people debating this are people who aren't of any real consequence.

    Nice gallery, though.

Your intentions were good, but I saw that you judged the majority of games by looks, what is terrible when you're talking about art. I believe I wouldn't be wrong if I said that you judged the games by graphics, what is even worse than judging them by looks. I expected to see Ori and the Blind Forest or Child of Light, games that don't run only by graphic or visual experience, but also develop their own stories and give players space to interact with the story with their own experience. That for me, is what is artistic in a game, not the way they copy or emulate cities or fantasy realities.

I need to go play Bioshock Infinite again, that game is truly beautiful. Other than that, I personally prefer a cartoony look, like WoW.

I would give Dragon Age: Inquisition the nod for a beautiful looking game. Too bad that is the only thing it has going for it.

Games are art, even the terrible ones. Simply because they are a creation from someone's headspace. They are not mechanical things, which have 1 function, and plod along. They are elegant strings of, wound together through a 3D or 2D world which has literally been created. Virtually or not, its a creation, therefore art.

    Yes, even CoD...
