Star Wars: Battlecry Unveils Its First Pre-Alpha Gameplay Trailer

In a galaxy far, far away... lots of people are trying to make another sequel to Battlefront.

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. I am bringing to you today the happy news that EA is not the only one busy at work on a Star Wars shooter. A ragtag bunch of rebels, including most of the original team behind Star Wars: First Strike (the total conversion mod for Battlefield 2142), have been hard at work making a spiritual successor to Battlefront.

Utilizing Unreal Engine 4 (previously CryEngine 3), the team has come a long way from when it was a simple dream to bring back that classic style of Battlefront gameplay, but with some modern tweaks. The most drastic change is an emphasis on using scopes. It’s not straight up like Call of Duty‘s iron sights though, having more in common with Counter-Strike‘s scoped weapons. You also can’t drop someone instantly.

Vehicles have been confirmed, and you can see some footage below of early versions of the AT-ST and speeder bike:

Bear in mind that this is a free-to-play fan project. As a result, no one’s paying the developers, so it may be another year or two before it gets released in a playable Alpha state. However, it also means that if it comes to fruition, everyone gets a free-to-play Battlefront spin-off they can try out if the new Star Wars: Battlefront isn’t to their liking.

If you like what you see, be sure to keep an eye on the project’s ModDB page. Updates usually go up every month or two, and if you have the skills, they are always looking for additional team members.

How do you feel about fan sequels? Do you think Disney/Lucasfilm will let this project go on, like Lucas Arts did in the past? Do you prefer seeing the game in its current state over a CGI trailer? Let us know in the comments below!
