Spotlight Pokemon: Goodra

In this inaugural edition of Spotlight Pokemon, we highlight the gooey Dragon, Goodra. Read on for our guide on this final form of Goomy in Pokemon X and Y.

This week’s Spotlight Pokémon is Goodra, who is new to the series in Pokemon X and Y. Goodra is a Dragon-type Pokémon and therefore takes double damage from other Dragon attacks, Fairy, and Ice. It takes half damage from Fire, Water, Electric, and Grass. All other types do normal damage to Goodra.

Goodra, the Gooey Dragon

Goodra was selected for its excellent Special Defense and Abilities that make it interesting in competitive battling.

Goodra’s Base Stats:

HP: 90

Attack: 100

Defense: 70

Special Attack: 110

Special Defense: 150

Speed: 80

Goodra is the final form of Goomy. Goomy evolves into Sliggoo at level 40, then into Goodra at level 50, but it has to be raining. I have tested it myself, and Rain Dance doesn’t count; it has to be raining in the game somewhere. I evolved mine at route 14, where you can catch Goomy.

Goodra’s Abilities

Goodra has access to two normal Abilities and one Hidden Ability.

Sap Sipper is a normal ability that raises Goodra’s Attack stat when hit by a Grass-type move. It will also not receive damage from Grass-type attacks. If you decide to use it as a Physical Attacker, this can be useful to use against Pokémon that use Grass-type moves. It can also be useful in double battles if you have another Pokémon with Grass moves. Just hit your own Goodra with a Grass attack, and its Attack will raise.

Hydration is the other normal ability it gains, and my favorite. It will heal Poison, Sleep, Paralysis, Burn, and Frozen when raining. This pretty much gives it immunity to anyone doing status effects.

Since it is best when used to tank special attacks, this ability combined with the moves Rain Dance and Rest makes Goodra a force to be reckoned with. Simply use Rain Dance to make it rain, and when you are low on HP, use Rest to gain it all back. At the end of the turn, Hydration will kick in and remove sleep so you don’t waste any turns.

Gooey is the Hidden Ability that Goodra learns. This makes any contact done to Goodra lower the attacker’s Speed stat. This can also be particularly useful to slow down quick opponents so that your other Pokémon can take them out.

I’m not sure I want many hugs from it.

Stay Hydrated with Goodra

I use a Goodra with the ability Hydration on one of my teams. His moveset is Rain Dance, Thunder, Rest, and Dragon Breath. Its purpose is to tank Special Attackers with his high Special Defense. I use Rain Dance to set up for Thunder, and use Rest to stop status effects. I use Rest liberally whenever I’ve taken a decent amount of damage, Thunder if they aren’t immune or resistant to it, and Dragon Breath in all other situations. Dragon Breath can be replaced with a higher damaging attack, but I chose it because it has a chance to paralyze the enemy. Thunder can paralyze as well, but it can’t hit Ground types.

I hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about Goodra. If you have any suggestions on things to add or Pokémon to include, just let me know in the comments, and be sure to check out my other Pokemon X and Y guides!
