Psychonauts 2 Finds a Publisher

The sequel to the cult-classic, Psychonauts, takes another step toward release.

Psychonauts 2, the sequel to the 2005 fan-favorite platformer, Psychonauts, has been in development for some time now. The project is being led by Tim Schafer and his team at Double Fine Productions. Now, in addition to having a team of dedicated developers, Psychonauts 2 has a publisher.

Swedish indie developer Starbreeze Studios has come on board to publish Psychonauts 2. They will be contributing $8 million USD to the game’s production, adding onto the money already acquired by Double Fine from their successful Fig campaign. With this money, the game will be digitally distributed to PC, as well as to several consoles.

The details of the deal made between Starbreeze and Double Fine are as follows:

“Starbreeze will be able to recoup 100% of its full investment including marketing costs with an initial revenue share of 85% after distribution and platform fees and Fig crowdfunding revenue share. Starbreeze share of revenues will become 60% after the investment is recouped. Double Fine will retain 100% of the intellectual property relating to Psychonauts 2.”

Both Tim Schafer and the CEO of Starbreeze Studios, Bo Andersson-Klint, had something to say regarding this new development.

Anderson-Klint commented that:

“Many of us gamers who’ve grown up during 70’s and 80’s have at some point come across the great games from Double Fine and Tim Schafer. Games like Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, and Brütal Legend are all in the list of personal all time favorites for many of us. We’re very proud to be able to add this prominent collaboration to our Publishing business. Starbreeze is looking forward to support Double Fine in bringing the new and exciting game Psychonauts 2 to young and old gamers world wide.”

Meanwhile, Schafer had this to say:

“Starbreeze is the perfect partner for Double Fine and our backers on Psychonauts 2. Their expertise in not just developing and publishing games, but supporting them after launch will be a great benefit for players of the game.”

Psychonauts 2 is currently set for a 2018 release. When it does hit shelves, fans can expect to see Raz and the gang once more — this time in a story set after both the original Psychonauts and the VR title, Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin.
