Alternative FF14 Soundtracks – Copperbell Mines + Hard Mode

A mining soundtrack that's one part fluffy, one part Welsh, and all alternative.

We’re back with another inglorious alternative soundtrack to break up the monotony of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn’s (FF14) repetitive music.

This week, we move on to the next dungeon: Copperbell Mines. Filled with giants and spriggans, we’ve put together a playlist that’s as equally as fluffy as inspired by the mining heritage of Wales in the United Kingdom.

As well as giving you a playlist of the usual twelve tracks to keep you going, we’ve added three bonus tracks for players who are tackling the “hard mode” version released with update 2.0.

So fire up FF14, descend into Copperbell, and get fighting to these choice tunes.

1. “Theme from ‘Shaft'” – Isaac Hayes

MGM’s “blaxplotation” film is probably better known for its Grammy Award winning soundtrack provided by Isaac Hayes. Beat the first few trash mobs and then descend down “SHAFT B2″ (that’s right).

2. “Working in a Coal Mine” – Devo/Lee Dorsey

Even though Copperbell doesn’t exactly mine coal, this track is somewhat apt. We’ve chosen the cover by Devo to get you in the mood.

3. “Total Eclipse of the Heart” – Only Men Aloud/Bonnie Tyler

You can’t have a mine without a Welsh male voice choir nearby. Only Men Aloud shot to fame after winning the BBC’s talent show Last Choir Standing. Here, they perform an all-male close harmony version of Bonnie Tyler’s (also Welsh) classic 1980s power ballad, even featuring Ms. Tyler herself.

Boy oh “boyo”! Only Men Aloud.

4. “All Mine” – Tom Jones/The Divine Comedy

Welsh superstar, Tom Jones, released an album of collaborations and covers back in 2003. For this track, he teams up with eccentric Northern Irish band, The Divine Comedy, for a track that has the word “mine” in it.

5. “Diamonds Are Forever” – Shirley Bassey

Shirley Bassey, also from Wales, is famous for singing the some of the opening title songs to Cubby Broccoli’s famous film adaptations of Ian Flemming’s James Bond novels. Diamonds, which are mined, add a bit of sparkle to what is otherwise a grubby dungeon.

6. “Rabbit” – Chas & Dave

We’re not exactly sure what spriggans are exactly, but they closely resemble rabbits. For the first boss, and the beginning of “hard mode”, there’s a lot of them. So adding a few more by way of Cockney duo Chas & Dave can’t hurt, right?

7. “The Killing Moon” – Echo and the Bunnymen

More bunnies in the form of Liverpudlian 1980s band. If you want something with a bit more va-va-voom, then try Nouvelle Vague’s very French New Wave cover.

8. “Juxtaposed to You” – Super Fury Animals

Spriggans aren’t super, but they’re certainly furry animals. Super Fury Animals are a Welsh band whose biggest success in the US was oddly their album, Mwng, written and sung entirely in the Welsh languageThis, thankfully, is from one of their English language albums.

9. “Rockin’ the Suburbs” – Ben Folds

There are lots of rocks here; it is a mine after all. With all the trouble going on at Copperbell Mines, it’s certainly rocking the Ul’dah suburbs. Ben Fold’s tongue-in-check satire was oddly chosen as the title track for children’s animated film Over The Hedge. NB This track contains explicit language.

10. “Miss Dy-na-mi-tee” – The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain/Miss Dynamite

Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of Miss Dynamite, a little known British one-hit-wonder. But her moniker is somewhat fitting for blowing up the Ichorous Ire. We’ve chosen this rather wacky ukulele cover.

Uke ’till you puke! The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain.

11. “Fossils from ‘Carnival of the Animals'” – Camille Saint Saens

After blasting your way to the final furlong towards the last boss, you’re greeted by some Ancient Fossils. French composer Camille Saint Saens’s jaunty track is ideal for defeating them.

12. “Birdhouse in Your Soul” – They Might Be Giants

Whilst the jury is still out on whether this American band are or aren’t giants, the last boss certainly is!

Hard Mode Extra

1. “Disco Inferno” – The Trammps

Watch that bridge burn! Beware, the Flambeau just can’t get enough and it might just self-destruct, wiping you party, if you don’t kill it quickly.

2. “Notorious B.I.G.” – The Norotious B.I.G.

This self-titled track from one of raps biggest icons will help you bring down the notorious B.I.G.G.Y. NB This track contains explicit language.

3. “Crimewave” – Crystal Castles

A great track by electronica duo Crystal Castles for feeding the Abyss Worm those crystalized rocks.
