Leaked Gameplay of Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun Found

A half-hour of gameplay footage from the canceled sequel to Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver has been found thanks (again) to NeoGaf member, Mama Robotnik.

Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun‘s existence was discovered back in 2013, also found by Mama Robotnik, and put out in an information dump along with nine other canceled Legacy of Kain games. Dead Sun, an Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 title developed by Climax Studios (of Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories fame) with the multiplayer (yes, multiplayer in a Legacy of Kain game) being done by Psyonix, was canceled by Square Enix in 2012.

After the original leak, Square Enix’s then-Community Manager, George Kelion, confirmed the game’s cancellation. “I can confirm that Dead Sun was a project which had been in development – but which was cancelled,” Kelion wrote.

“I know it’s disappointing to hear about these things out of context, and whilst some of the details released are accurate – some details are not. You know game projects can be cancelled for a variety of different reasons and I know it’s very hard to tell from images and info alone, but in the end LoK: Dead Sun just wasn’t the right game, at the right time… but you’ll have to take me at my word on that, I’m afraid.”

The only surviving relic of this lost game is Psyonix’s multiplayer portion, which was expanded upon and became the Square Enix’s Legacy of Kain spin-off, Nosgoth, free-to-play multiplayer shooter recently released in open beta.

While still unconfirmed, it is speculated the reason for Dead Sun‘s cancellation was that market projections would land below Square Enix’s sales expectations.
