La-Mulana Creator’s Thoughts on the Japanese Indie Scene

Japan's indie scene has some issues unique to the region.

Playism is a company focused on localizing (mostly) Japanese indie games in the West. Most of you are likely familiar with the name from the recent La-Mulana remake release, which Playism localized and Active Gaming Media Inc. published on Steam.

The official Playism blog has an interesting feature on La-Mulana developer Takumi Naramura and his view on the Japanese indie scene, which is more than a bit more complicated than over here. He gives his views on the hurdles Japanese indie developers have to jump, and the process behind remaking the game in a way that made the remake worth playing even to those who had played the original.

Much like La-Mulana itself, I don’t want to spoil the post for those of you interested in a different world of indie development and in studio NIGORO.

I’m still playing through the game myself and have no intention of writing my official review until I’ve proven that I am worthy of doing so by beating the game. It may be a while and I’ve already fallen in love with it, but I feel I’m giving La-Mulana the respect it deserves. It deserves a lot.
