Final Fantasy VII Web Series Goes to Kickstarter

Fill that Final Fantasy VII void in your life with this web series.

A small group of talented fans got together in 2012 and created a mock trailer for an imagined Final Fantasy VII movie, led by director Gionata Medeot. Now they’re tackling a full-scale series called “Final Fantasy VII: The Web Series.” Shinra Productions has received the blessing of Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and have successfully received the rights to the music.

They are asking for $400,000 to create the five to six-episode series, each episode estimated to be 80-90 minutes long. Including all the important aspects of the game would be too much for a Hollywood-budget film, but a detailed and free web series may get close to a satisfying rendition of the story and characters.

They started with three people and are now a team of 250 people, most of them working for FREE. They are some of the best in the world, including professionals from the movie industry, such as people who worked on Scott Pilgrim, Resident Evil, Harry Potter, The Internship, and more. You may be familiar with Team2X for their sensational YouTube videos and crazy martial arts, free running, acrobats, and wire work — well, they’re part of the production too.

The music and art departments are hard at work creating and arranging. They’ve gathered some of the world’s best and brightest, and have shirts and prints available in their Redbubble store. Go. Now.

As a Final Fantasy geek, I’m so stoked for this. Because Square Enix isn’t showing any indications of remaking Final Fantasy VII anytime soon, this is the next best thing. With a huge team of professionals working on the series, we can expect quality and people that know what it means to do justice to the original.
