Coronavirus Delay Pushes Minecraft Festival Back

Another Coronavirus delay popped up, and this time, it's Minecraft related.

The global spread of the coronavirus — and concerns over that spread — has delayed and canceled a number of events this year, including GDC 2020. Minecraft Festival is the latest in the string of delays.

Mojang says it’s not canceled canceled — just postponed. Until next year…

The news comes in an official update on the Minecraft website. It might seem a bit premature to postpone an event that isn’t scheduled until September, but there’s a good reason behind it. The team says it’s not so much concern over health and safety as it is a practical issue with planning.

Our partners, producers, and exhibitors are based in all corners of the world, and right now we can’t meet and collaborate in the way we need to. Without knowing exactly when we can resume planning, we have decided to postpone.

That way, we can make sure that next year’s event will be the amazing one that our community expects and deserves.

Meanwhile, Minecraft Live is still set to go ahead as usual, and of course, we still have Minecraft Dungeons to look forward to.

While Minecraft Festival’s delay is naturally bad news for Minecraft fans, it also raises questions over other big events this year, namely E3 2020. Currently, the Entertainment Software Association has not indicated whether the event will still go ahead in June. The organization is still deliberating, though many other major events, such as GDC and The Taipei Game Show, have been canceled.
